I help create a world where men can be whole, belong, and contribute.
“I love being in the room when people change their minds about men. Especially the men.” — Matthew Sloane
The Roots of My Work
I’ve been engaged in men’s work since 2004, when I first joined a men’s group. Out of that formative period, I wrote and illustrated Hiding Inside a Man—a book exploring my own confusion about what it meant to be a man, and the quiet emergence of an inner ally I now call self-compassion. The book has been described as “encouraging” and “a gift of guidance.”
Speaking to men from my own lived experience is one way I invite them to claim and share their own. I don’t want men to be like me. I want to help create the conditions for men to become who they came here to be—so their presence, relationships, and leadership serve something larger than themselves.
A Few Human Details
- I have an unreasonable love for ’80s pop music.
- I’m a dad. Wanting to set a steady tone for my young kids has led me into a deep, ongoing practice of nervous system regulation.
- I coach young kids in ultimate frisbee—which is mostly a cover for teaching self-improvement and appreciation for teammates.
- I’m a husband. I’ve weathered hard moments in partnership and continue to choose honest expression and responsibility for my contributions—both the healthy and the less skillful ones.
- In college, I flirted with majors in Art, Physics, and Economics before landing on Creative Writing.
- Writing remains my primary way of taking responsibility for, and learning from, my inner life and lived experience.
- I am change geek — certified as an Integral Coach, Prosci Change Management facilitator, and love supporting people through arcs of growth (in part, because change is an unfolding story) .
