I help groups engage men in ways that foster responsibility, belonging, and contribution—grounded in a long-term study of men and masculinity, and shaped by lived, relational work.
“I love being in the room when people change their minds about men. Including the men.” — Matthew Sloane
The Roots of My Work
I’ve been engaged in men’s work since 2004, when I first joined a men’s group. Out of that formative period, I wrote and illustrated Hiding Inside a Man—a book exploring my own confusion about what it meant to be a man, and the quiet emergence of an inner ally I now call self-compassion. The book has been described as “encouraging” and “a gift of guidance.”
Speaking to men from my own lived experience is one way I invite them to claim and share their own. I don’t want men to be like me. I want to help create the conditions for men to become who they came here to be—so their presence, relationships, and leadership serve something larger than themselves.
Examples of My Work
Workplace culture & belonging
Initiated a peer feedback and coaching program within a male-dominated, hands-on workforce—introducing shared language and practical structures that helped people show up more fully and bring their best selves to work.
Community systems around boys & young men
Co-founded a community-based coalition of parents, educators, and high school students focused on strengthening the systems around boys and young men so they feel seen, valued, and connected—and so the whole community benefits from their engagement.
Men’s circles & relational spaces
Co-created and continue to facilitate a drop-in men’s circle within a sauna and cold-therapy community space—cultivating brotherhood, self-compassion, and renewed hope for dozens of men (so far).
